Mack & Vernier Intersection Improvements

The City of Grosse Pointe Woods received grant funding for safety improvements to the intersection of Mack Avenue and Vernier Rd, the intersection of Vernier Rd and Sunningdale Park, and the Vernier Rd crossover east of Mack Avenue. The prime contractor for the project is Motor City Electric Utilities. The project start date will be dependent on weather but is anticipated to begin in April. Below is a summary of changes that will be made as a result of the project.

Mack & Vernier:

  • Span wire traffic signals will be removed and replaced with decorative mast arm signals
  • Direct left turns at Mack & Vernier will be removed in favor of “Michigan Lefts”
  • Center island will be reconfigured to suit the changes in traffic movements
  • Removal of the designated left turn lane for NB Mack to WB Vernier

Vernier & Sunningdale:

  • New mast arm signalized intersection including a direct left turn lane from WB Vernier to SB Sunningdale
  • New signalized pedestrian crosswalk across Vernier Rd west of Sunningdale
  • Widening Vernier Rd east of Sunningdale to accommodate the new left turn lane

Vernier Crossover:

  • Removal of existing, two-way crossover
  • New mast arm signalized crossover for EB to WB traffic only
